Good and Bad Media
_
When thinking about appropriate media for children, one
usually regards the medium as either "good" or "bad".
However, there is a dilemma to this: What is good for children? What is bad? I
find that too often, this important decision is made from the perspective
of the parent, although parents and children are quite different. Rather than
view children according to parents, it would be best to view children according
to, well, children. This way, "good" and "bad" media will
be best made to suit their interests. Although I do agree with parents taking
responsibility for their child's media consumption habits, the reality is that
kids want what they can't have.

Growing up, I was never allowed to
watch The Simpsons,
due to the "impressionable effects" it would have had on me. As it turns
out, those "impressionable effects" would turn out to be positive
ones. It's still unusual how many times I find myself relating real-life
situations to a Simpsons episode.

Now, I understand
that these two are very different shows for very different demographics, but
when I was growing up, I found myself taking away more from The Simpsons than
I did from Barney
and Friends. From both an educational and pop-cultural perspective, I
find this show to be a rather basic, top-down approach to the
"edutainment" brand.
