Curriculum? What Curriculum?

The standards for
education are usually set by large governing bodies; for example, a public
school curriculum would have to be approved by the school board. It is
important to ensure quality education by sticking to the script. But what if
students show a lack of interest in the status quo? This is where the concepts
of official and unofficial curriculum come in.

Here is a scene
from Ferris
Bueller's Day Off, in which the teacher rambles through his lesson,
without encouraging much engagement from the class. Although this is an
exaggerated idea of official curriculum, most kids in real life would feel the
same way about it.

In To Sir, With Love (a
favourite film of mine), the teacher attempts to deliver the three R's to a
class of rowdy students in an underfunded high school in London. When the
plan backfires and the material does not register with them, he decides to
prepare them for adulthood by introducing some material of his own.
